Over 23 million people are infected with COVID 19 which is a new and potentially serious coronavirus. Considering the situation, The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared COVID 19 as a public health emergency of the international concern. The symptoms of COVID 19 are fever, cough, breathing problems, tiredness, and muscle aches but in severe cases, it can cause infection in the lungs and kidney leading to the death of the person. The effect of coronavirus on a diabetic patient is very severe and they become seriously ill when infected with COVID 19.
Complications Related to COVID-19 in Diabetic Patients
Till now no vaccine is discovered against COVID 19, neither there is any medicine available exclusively for removing the virus from the body. If a person with a diabetic is infected with coronavirus then it becomes harder to treat since the level of blood glucose starts to fluctuate and possibly because of the presence of previous diabetes complications. Hence due to COVID 19 risk for the diabetic patient, it becomes very essential to take precautions in advance so that the virus can be avoided. No matter whether the person has Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes both the type can increase the risk of contraction. As per the current review, it is observed that Type 2 diabetes increases the incidence of infectious diseases that are mainly related to co-morbidities whereas Type 1 diabetes increases the risk for morbidity and mortality.
How can COVID Effect on Diabetic Patients?
COVID 19 is very risky for diabetic patients and it is observed that people with diabetes have developed higher rates of serious complications and death than that of the people who do not have diabetes. When a person with diabetes develops COVID 19 hyperglycemia which occurs due to a high level of sugar or glucose in the blood occurs in the patient leading to dysfunction of the immune response. Due to the dysfunction of the immune system the patient loses its capacity to control the spread of invading pathogens which makes them more susceptible to COVID infection.
In some diabetic patients, severe damage was found to occur in the blood circulatory system due to which the healing effect of the blood got highly affected by the patient. Due to such a COVID effect on diabetic patients, the rate of death of a diabetic patient is much higher than that of the non-diabetic patient.
